Michigan Tech Online Learning FAQHow does an online degree program work?Online learning allows you to study whenever and wherever it's most convenient for you. This format provides a great deal of flexibility to people with complicated schedules and demanding careers. Getting your degree online involves interaction with instructors and classmates online, rather than attending class on a traditional campus. Courses are delivered entirely online via the Internet; you will complete all your work using a computer. Will I have to attend classes at a campus?No. Our academic programs are offered and are accessible completely online, giving you the convenience and flexibility to earn your degree wherever you have Internet access. What will my classes be like?Michigan TechOnline courses are offered online with components delivered via videostreaming and WebCT. See What is an online class for more information. Who teaches the classes?Classes are taught using industry-current technology by faculty members who have advanced degrees and bring situation-specific relevance to every course to ensure that you are prepared for real-life challenges after you graduate. Where do I start?Whether you're wanting to complete your degree or simply interested in taking a few classes, contact us at techonline@mtu.edu See How to take classes for more information. What courses do you offer?Scheduled Courses is the most up-to-date source of information on courses. Will I have to be admitted to Michigan Tech to take courses?Anyone taking a course from Michigan Tech must be admitted either as a degree-seeking or non-degree-seeking student. See Apply for more information. How much does it cost?Online students pay an online learning fee of $38 per credit to support the technology. However, they do not pay the other fees that on-campus students pay. See Tuition and Fees for more information. Is financial aid available?See Financial Aid for more information. Will my previous course work transfer?Yes, previous course work can be used toward your Michigan TechOnline degree as long as the work is from an accredited community college or university. See Transfer credit for more information. How and when do I register for courses?See Register for more the registration form. Where do I get course materials?You may order most textbooks, printed packets, and videos through the Michigan Tech Bookstore online. When do courses start?Michigan TechOnline courses follow the regular Michigan Tech semester schedule. See our Academic Calendar for more dates. What are the computer requirements for an online course?You need Internet access, a web-browser, and an e-mail account. See Technical Requirements for more information. How do I logon to my course in Blackboard ( formerly WebCT)?You can log into Blackboard using any browser. Go to My Blackboard at MTU. You will need your user name and your ISO password. See Getting online for more information. What does asynchronous and synchronous mean?Asynchronous classes don't have set meeting times. Rather, you choose the times when you receive class materials by going to a Web site to view the materials. Synchronous classes are ones that have set meeting times (even if the meetings occur via satellite or real-time chat). Synchronous classes have schedules that are determined well before the class begins (every Thursday at 7 pm, for instance). Do I have to live in Michigan to take Michigan TechOnline courses?You do not have to be an Michigan resident to take online courses through Michigan TechOnline. Non-resident students pay the out-of-state tuition. How are tests administered?You are responsible for finding proctors for your exams. Will the credits I receive at Michigan TechOnline transfer to another college or university?Transfer of credit is always up to the receiving institution; however, during your discussion with the institution about transferring credits, you can inform the institution that Michigan Tech is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association. Are the college credits earned in Michigan TechOnline's degree programs equivalent to those earned at a traditional university?Yes. Transcripts do not reflect the delivery method of a course, only the credit hours earned. The objectives and outcomes of online courses are identical to those of an on-site class. What if I need assistance while pursuing my degree?Michigan TechOnline has a Help Desk to provide technical support. You may also contact your instructor by email at any time. |
