Do you have the necessary technology skills?
To be successful in an online class, you must have access to and be able to use the required technology. Look over list below to ensure you are technologically ready.
Do you have access to a computer with a CD-ROM drive, an Internet connection, and a printer at home or at work?
In order be a successful online student you will need access to a reliable computer with a CD-ROM drive, printer and Internet connection.
Are you able to send and receive e-mails with attachments?
The majority of the interaction with your instructor and classmates will be through e-mail. You should have a good understanding of how e-mail works, as well as, be able to send and open e-mail attachments.
Are you familiar with the basic skills listed below?
- the operating system of the computer you will be using to access the online course
- computer terms used such as mouse, drag, open, select, file, choose, double-click, download, upload, send, etc.
- saving, copying, and finding files/folders on floppy and hard drives
- navigating between two or more applications without closing and re-opening (multitasking)
- minimizing and maximizing Windows
Are you comfortable using email including the following skills?
- Sending, opening, replying to, and forwarding a message
- Entering a message subject
- Sending an attachment
- Opening and/or saving an attachment
Are you familiar with web browser skills?
- Going to a specific URL
- Printing a page
- Following a hypertext link
- Conducting a basic search using a search engine
- Downloading and install plug-ins
Are you proficient with word processor skills
- Opening a new file
- Opening an existing file
- Saving a file
- Renaming a file (Save As)
- Cutting, pasting, formating text
- Printing a document
Are you intimidated when you are asked to use software or technologies that you haven't used before (such as e-mail, voice mail, a VCR)?
Sometimes, new technology can seem pretty scary, but as long as you're willing to try, to spend the time necessary to get comfortable with a new technology, and to seek out the help you need when you run into trouble, a technology-dependent online class can work for you.
